What did you think of the movie The Craft?
I really didn't care for the movie. I have a teenage daughter who has been raise as a witch. The kids in school are now asking her can she call up Meno (sp?). It makes it hard for her. Fortunately, she handles it well, but I do wish she didn't have too.

Personaly, I thought it was the best portrayal of Witchcraft that Ive seen. They showed the 3 fold rule and the aspect of being attune with nature. Of course since it was made in Hollywood, it wasnt near as accurate as it could have been. It was entertaining, plus it showed how negative magick can back fire.

I liked the movie very much, I found that some of the rituals to be close to those used by other covens and gave me and other people in our coven to do more research on the net in order to better explain of beleafs. They should have more focused on the actual beleafes then the focus of special effects and myth. But all-in-all I give a good reveiw because it made people think about it, and made people research it more.

I agree with Foxwillow...this movie should only be viewed as
entertainment. I did enjoy watching the movie, but felt offended during
certain parts of it. This is the kind of thing we're trying to get away
from...movies giving people the wrong ideas about witches! We are most
generally portrayed as evil, sadistic creatures, when, in fact, we are
totally opposite. I think if any younger adults should happen to see
this, it should be explained to them that this IS only a movie, that
true witches are NOT evil, just as I did with my own neice who went to
see it with me. Please! We really need to get back to being witches,
providing healing, loving spirits to our younger ones, and the only way
to do that is through education.

I eagerly awaited the release of "The Craft," only to be truly disappointed.
I'll agree that it was a very entertaining movie, and the bug scene did merit
the classification of thriller, but I am more upset with the response that
this movie has evoked. I have been a follower of The Old Ways for longer than
I was even aware. Sharing my beliefs with my husband and family was difficult,
for they didn't quite understand Wiccan ways. Yet, they never interfered with
my beliefs or practices. Since, they viewed this movie, they think all Witches
are evil, crazy, or merely superstitious fools. When keys are misplaced, I am
chided to do a spell of retreat. They outwardly say that they do not want to
wrong me in fear that I may hex them. Friends now laugh off my beliefs as a
silly phase which will one day pass. If they can make movies such as "King of
Kings," or "The Ten Commandments," which meet the approval of the
corresponding religious groups and the tolerance of the rest of the general
public, then why can't they make an accurate movie portraying The Craft? One
other point that I found upsetting is the effect that this movie has had on
many teenagers. I am a high school teacher, and my students brought up the
topic of this movie. I was shocked to hear that many of them believed what
they saw was indeed truth. They pondered on whether any of them knew any
'real' Witches, as those in the movie. After the class, I told 2 students that
I was a Witch. They didn't believe me as I am very different from the girls
portrayed in the movie. After a brief, but accurate explanation of Wicca and
Wiccan beliefs, I saw the light of understanding in their eyes. This brought
a little relief to my spirit. If we are to teach tolerance of differences in
order to stop violence stemming from ignorance, then why, as a culture do we
propogate ignorance as entertainment. The beauty and wonder of Wicca has kept
me entertained, and has brought enjoyment to my life. These values must have
some merit- even in Hollywood. I apologize for the length of my convictions,
but I felt that they needed to be shared.

The movie "The Craft" was a lot of fun. I had a great time with a lot of my friends seeing this movie. But, I feel that a lot of people will get the wrong Idea about witchcraft. I was upset that the girls had no
understanding about the three-fold law. In the movie they don't even know what it is until it is mentioned in the occult shop and then it seemed to me that they ignored it. That was the first thing I learned even as a solitary searching on my own! There are enough bad books on witchcraft out there without Hollywood getting involved! My opinion!
Julie
I loved the Craft. It was such a good movie, and the stuff about the
religion was really interesting, even though they invented Manon.
Sarah
Most of the posts here are very true about how it dosn't portray Wicca
but I don't believe it was ment to. I must say I found more true facts
about witchcraft in this movie than in movies like Warlok, but this is
just a movie not a documentary. I found it very interesting. It at least
taught some people (hopefully) that witchcraft is not a childs game.

I found it mildly entertaining. The only thought that kept running through my mind was that it was "Witchboard" meets "Clueless."

The Craft was the best movie that I have ever seen. The things that they did
were really cool.
Must Depart........Centra1999
I found "The Craft" to be entertaining fantasy. I found a few
accuracies in parts of their rituals, but the good witch vs. bad witch was a trifle sophmoric in it's portrial. So much of our religion is contained in mysteries that cannot be seen with the naked eye, but only with the naked soul. Enjoy this movie, but only as the fiction it portrays.
FoxWillow
Im not a witch but am interested in it a little even before the Craft came out. It kinda changed the way I look at witchcraft now. I didn't like how they made our hero use evil to warn off her enemies. I think that maybe it should have showed when it is or isnt ok to use the majic. I have alot of friends that now walk around telling people to back off because they are witches. They figure they can do that now and have people not like them or at least fear them the same way Nancy did in the Movie.
In all it was a good movie and entertaining for teens around my age (15). I still might study witchcraft some more but have the common sence to know my limits and what I pesonally want. Unlike the witches in that movie.
Terry
I saw The Craft four times in the theater. I loved it. I rented it and bought it a week later. I have owned it for two weeks and have watched it about fifty times. It was definitly the best movie I have seen in a while.
Psycho chik
My opinion of The Craft is that of a witch that has been studying all her life. 27 years. In my opinion it was a poor showing of what the Craft is REALLY about. I do believe that in a couple of cases they were accurate, but mostly I believe that this movie will bring about a lot of false witches. I have met many people since the movie came out that claim to be witches, and it is because of this movie. Some of the people I have met claim that they are Satanic witches and that they got interested in Satanism because of the movie. I'm sorry, but I feel if you are going to make a movie about Wiccan beliefs then you should be careful not to promote the power aspect of it, but rather the beauty of our lovely religion.
Thank you.
Lizzy~
I have viewed the film several times and kept on enjoying it! I realize that the film may not be an entirely accurate portrayal of the Wiccan religion, but you will be glad to know that because of that movie, the Wiccan religion now has one more follower! I am eager to begin the practice and remain very open minded! However, I am still slightly confused about some aspects and am having a difficult time getting started! If anyone would like to e-mail me with suggestions, tips, whatever, I would appreciate it greatly!
Sincerely,
Eugene-Steven-Finn
Well I found the Movie very entertaining and almost accurate, well it was accurate in how some rituals were performed but it was also fanciful, BUT it has to be if it was completely accurate then we'd have every teenage girl and some boys out there trying to draw down the spirit... I don't think that'd be a good Idea, do any of you? SO I say it was a great witchcraft movie. And Fairuza Balk is a total BABE! To bad she was psycho in the movie But that's what happens when you mess with what you don't control.I guess some people don't understand that.
OK, the movie wasn't very realistic, but let's face it, it was a good movie. Just think, the people made it and they wanted to make money. So, they made it entertaining. If it was perfect and full of facts of exactly how to do everything then a lot of people would be running around doing stupid things and hurting each other because they just didn't know any better. I guess what I'm really saying is... Good movie, don't criticize it for the lack of facts.

I think the craft caught peoples attention and made them less afraid of witchcraft. I also think alot of what they did was fictional but like i said it gives you an understanding of it. I haven't been practicing long enough to voice a strong poinion but that movie is what strongly caught my attention and got me interested more then I was before.

I found the movie to be somewhat informative, but the physical aspects of the portrayal in the movie were incorrect, in my opinion. Too much glamour and not enough accuracy. If Hollywood is going to make a movie based on the Wiccan religion, they should make it more authentic and less "glamourous", in my opinion. I'm fairly new to Wicca, so I may have missed some things in the movie that pertained to the religion. If you would send me some information on it, I would gladly receive it.
Blessed be.

I found the movie very accurate. There are a few differences, of course, like the 3x3 spell cast or how some of the spells were worked. But upon reading Scott Cunningham and talking with an occult store in New Orleans I understood the reasons behind calling the corners and the circles. It was an entertaining film and served a warning that we should never underestimate or try and control the powers of nature.
VampGirl
I just watched the movie this evening. I had heard so much about it from the Pagan Press both pro and con. I figured I better check it out.
Not a bad movie really. I particularly appreciated the fact that the portions of the rites they showed were almost straight out of the Gardnerian BoS. I hope the folks watching this flik don't believe that Magick works so dramatically! We all know that at times it can but good heavens!
I hope that Hollywood will continue to make these kinds of movies. I also hope that they can make one that has a firmer grip on reality...oh wait...they are not in the reality business. ;)

I thought that The Craft had it's good and bad points. I enjoyed the
lessons it taught about the threefold law and what happens when you abuse
powers. However, I disagreed with the movie when the goth witch turned
psycho. It only made more people think that we witches are all looney.
Gia Mora
I have to admit I loved the film!!!! I've seen a few times now, and each time I notice something different.
I though it portrayed the light and dark side of witchcraft, and
effectively set an example of how one can stray from the path once the right powers are invoked. Of course it was highly stylized for theatre purposes, but other than that it was true to heart. The threefold rule, building the cone of power, and the possibility of inherant power was well done, although I think that one who doesn't know better would expect their first dealings with witchcraft to have the same effect. Still, if you believe enough, and are pure in what you do, I don't think anything is impossible.
Blessed be!

I liked the movie for what it was, a MOVIE. It wasn't ment to be a documentary on witchcraft in America today. I think people lose sight of that when they see these things. And I can see why that is given the fact that the subject is one very near and dear to us all. But those who are suddenly into witchcraft because of the moive will slowly die off when they realize that they can't float around rooms and make fire balls appear out of nowhere. There could, however, be a handful of people that embark upon the craft through seeing this movie and really learn and educate themselves regarding the real meaning behind Wicca and witchcraft and could find their true path. You never can tell. I did think that even though it was a movie it did present the craft as balanced as it could. You just have to remember that if they'd make a movie with the main intent on educating and not entertaing, nobody but people that were already into witchcraft would have bothered to see it and it would have been on the History channel, not in major theaters.

I reckon this film will serve as an excellent filter. Anyone who comes along saying "teach me to levitate and magic up snakes in peoples' baths" is dumb and you say no. Anyone who comes and says "This really chimes with me but the special effects have to be bull, right?" is less dumb, and you should consider them.
As to fundies, just laugh. The joke's on them.

i loved it! but i think it showed many people... well it may have made alot of people think differently about us... so yes and no. :) :(

I saw the movie the Craft and the funny thing it was around the time I decided to wait a year and a day for self-dedication. I was already knowledgeable in the "Occult" and understood what was going on. I thought it show that magick can't be unsed for good or bad it depends on how the practioner uses their power.
The one thing that disturbed me was that it shown alot of truth about our religion, but then they added in the Christian proganda about "glamour magick" etc. It seemed to be truthful at one point and then swayed into the land of delusion and misconceptions of Wicca.

The Craft, was quite a movie, if I remember, that movie was the nearest of them all to actual witchcraft, now remembering that these are teenagers (I've work in a new-age book store, and the amount of teenagers that ask for black magic books are astounding, and no it's not because of the movie, that's even before the movie came out!!)
The karmic assossiation is good, and the ritual gives some amount of information for people that knows nothing, that they might of think that saying some weard phrase and flicking the finger would move mountains!!! now they saw that you had some preparation to do, some method to follow (I know there is many aspect of ritual, but for here, I'm talking about people that knows nothing watching 'The Craft') and that it sometime takes days or even weeks !!
In all, I found it quite good, and I'm sure that it did open the curiousity to some people that did watch the movie, and that they decided to take on a long and beatifull journey.
NightOwl
i went to go see the craft with my best bud beth, whose into wicca to, when it first came out and we were just appalled by it. if holywood was going to make a movie about wicca, the least they could have done was read up on it. no witch in the world has the kind of power that sarah had in the movie. plus the only person who came close to being a witch in the movie was the shop keeper, and even she was a little off.

Against what I'm sure is popular opinion, I liked The Craft. However, my opinion comes from the inside so I can "blow off" a lot of the unrealistic aspects of the story line. Being a Witch myself, I understood the fiction of it. I thought it did a good job of showing the law of 3 in action and it was a good topic for discussion with my husband...who leans more toward Christianity than anything else and doesn't understand my religion. I enjoy horror movies in general and can weed out the truth from the garbage. However, because of my husbands' reactions and questions, I can see how this movie portrayed us in a way that will draw "undesirables" to our religion, not understanding that there is more to this than "making people float!" I found the same problems with the tv show Bewitched. When people find out you're a witch the first thing they say is "Lets see you disappear or levitate". I find all that very annoying. When you try to explain it to them they are so sensitized by tv and movies that they then say that you really can't be a witch because you don't do those things! I WOULD really like to see movies and tv be more realistic about our religion but as long as it opens the doors for discussion in clearing up the misconceptions I will probably continue to watch. Even if it means the "youngsters" find a coven and find out it's not what they thought it was going to be, the truth will be told and they will learn. Then they can accept or not, if it's right for them. I think the worst part of it is that some will try to emulate or form covens on their own based on the bad "witch's" in the movie. I have seen some of these myself...it makes my heart ache that they don't seek out those who know and find out the truth. Anyway....I'm rambling...just my opinion! :)
In short I liked it because I'm there to explain to those who believed it all and I feel bad for those who choose to emulate it without knowing someone who can explain what Witchcraft or Wicca really is. It's a shame that Hollywood has to be so sensational!
Sorry....rambling again. :)

A friend and I have resently seen this film on Rental Video And I loved it. I understand that it is more than likely in accurate but they bend it to get ratings. This film has got us both realy interested in Wicca and we are doing lots of research about the subject to learn how to get into it, I know it's probably nothing like the film but I still like it and intend to find out. So if anyone out there has any useful info (Anything) for me I would be very thankfull.
The New Boy
I felt that the movie was a total waste of anyones time. Simply because all the so called witches were supposedly satanic. If people keep making movies like that people are going to be even more 'against' us than they usually would be.
breynolds@serv2.fwi.com
I thought the movie had a good message in it . It showed how if one was not careful in how the power was used it could and would turn on you. It also showed good and bad witches. Those who used the power to harm others ended up badly, those who used it wisely didn't.
gibson@netsites.net
i actualy enjoyed the movie, it showed magic as a force not to be
abused. the only one of the four teenagers that was innatly evil was that gothic looking one, but she got power and lured that other weaker willed witches into her web of lies. but the power of magic used justly is stronger than magic weilded for personal gain.
Kevin
Not much of an opinion either way regarding the movie, it was that bland, however, for all you new witches out there, I'd like to say something: NEVER STICK YOUR ATHAME IN THE GROUND! {this part is from Cheri}
To those of you who don't think this is a true portrayal of Wicca DUH! This was not meant to be a documentry, it was meant to make MONEY for someone in Hollywood, and as you know, in Hollywood the truth never makes money. Those of you who think Christians will use this against us DUH! Any Christian who tries to use this against you, tell them that it's about as true for us as "The Last Temptation of Christ" was true for them. I don't believe that anyone who practices Wicca in the way they showed in this movie is going to be able to do anything that harm them or others. Personally, I think it was a nice comedy, and well worth the $2.50 it cost to rent it. It gives me something to laugh at when someone asks me how to do a "glamour" spell, or if I know where they can get the book "The Craft"{this part is from
Joe-Dan}
May the Lord and Lady smile upon your hearts and in your lives
It is true that the movie had some outrageous special effects, and that
some of the things that are presented are not true (Levitations etc..)
but there were some good points brought up by the movie. Like the scene
with the butterflies and the part where the scars were taken away and
the threefold concept.
The fact that many younger Witches have emerged from the movie can
be good and bad. I feel that if they really want to get involved with
the Craft that we should try and encourage and educate them in the real
study of the Craft and the religion behind the spells. If they are
truly interested in the Craft, then they will want to learn about this.
I try in every way to help new Wiccans in any way I can. I am by no
means an expert, but try and share what I do know.
So overall I believe that the movie did more good than harm. It is
true that people will believe the bad more than good, but it has always
been that way and we would be naive to think that we could change that.
So I recommend the movie keeping in mind that if people truly want to
learn the Craft they will throw out the Hollywood stuff and learn the
true Craft of the Wise.
Blessed Be,
SilverWyndRyder
I think the movie sucked I mean they didn't even say ANU right and the only thing that I notised that was true was ThreeFold.

My husband and I watched the movie in our home. We were surprised at the relative accuracy to some of the more physical aspects of our religion.
Although, we were dissappointed at the lack of portrayal of the emotional side. There is much more to our beliefs than magick of the the physical sense. We found the movie "Powder" to be more of an accurate portrayal of our emotional beliefs. It is a start though. Thanks to the movie, many of our family members have become more interested and less fearful of our "strange" and "outrageous" beliefs. And they are much more interested in learning more about us. It has opened communication lines between us and helped us become more connected. We all just have to keep in mind that this IS a "Movie" for "entertainment purposes only" and not a "documentary".
Michaela & Dean
I saw the Craft in the movie theater and it got me and two of my very best friends interested in Wicca. Now we understand that the movie is not accurate about Wicca, but now we have looked into the history of Wicca and we have learned alot of things about it. I am thankful for the movie because I used to discriminate against people who practice Wicca as a religion, but now I respect them.
Kim Vinson
I personally find the movie "The Craft" entertaining, however I found it very fictional. The movie resembles the craft of Zzaiday ][ which is a variation of Witchcraft which is mostly spell casting of the mind for self-control. I practice this religion as I am one of the survivors left of the Zzaiday genocide. This craft that I am a part of , is very similiar to Witchcraft and is intended for those who are committed to the spell/curse and chant aspect of withcraft. I personally want to join Wicca to expand my horizons and I feel that Zzaiday would make a good addition to the Witchcraft religion as it is very similiar, such as the pentagram, anthame, three-fold law, and misuse of spells. I would like to join your religion and I would like help on how to get it started, I would also like to teach many out there the Art of Zzaiday as it is very helpful to your craft.
email me tfa@idirect.com if you would like more information as Zzaiday as it is a religion doomed to nonexistence.
