Into whose eyes do you peer
When gazing upon your face?
Is it but an image staring back
Existing in that time and space?
Look deeper, even still
Into those haunted eyes,
See what lies beneath the surface
Of that well worn disguise.
Dark pools and subtle shadows
They all shall swirl and blend,
Revolving into darkness,
Into a center with no end.
Pass beyond the doorway
That leads to inner thoughts,
Behind the fluttering lids
Of dark and dreaming plots.
Into the darkened tunnel
We pass through in dream and death,
Leading to the light divine
First glimpsed at one's last breath.
Here is your true being,
Not what lies without.
This be the spark of existence
Mortal death cannot snuff out.
Essence of all that you are
Held within a fragile shell.
Nothing more than a clay pot
Dipped into the eternal well.
Each life is but a sip
Of the infinity that we are.
And we return again and again
To fill another clay jar.
Each sip of eternity's nectar
Is a life span we consume.
Wisdom the soul ingests,
While locked in its fleshy tomb.
Into each life we enter
Thirsting for even more.
Our cup growing more full
Than it once was before.
When filled with wizened memories,
When chalice finally overflows
Into the light divine
Each soul eventually goes.
Til that blessed moment,
Be mindful of the goal.
Look into these eyes,
These portals to the soul.
Let them drink in beauty,
Relish the taste of all they see.
Savor every drop of essence,
Indulge in sweet tranquility.
Fill the soul with laughter,
And the salt of tears that fall.
Knowledge of each is needed
To give balance to it all.
Instinct is but remembrance
Of the forgotten past.
Lessons learned and knowledge earned
Carried to this life from the last.
Look into these eyes,
Know they have seen once before,
And they will see again
Til they need to see no more.
For one day they will open
And tears of joy swell.
The chalice is finally full,
The soul slips through the final veil.
