A Winter's Dawn

I awoke before the sun
And dressed quietly by the bed.
I looked in on the little one,
Made sure the dog was fed.
My morning cup of tea
Sat steaming by my side
As I settled before the window
To watch the dawning tide.
The sky was being transformed,
Dark night slipping away.
Soft light waking the horizon
To a cold, crisp winter's day.
Bony branches stretched upward
To scrape a blossoming sky,
Shivering in the chill wind,
Old Man Winter's sigh.
The sky began to change
To a myriad of gentle hues
Pastel pinks, oranges,
Yellows and subtle blues.
The landscape lay shrouded
Beneath a frozen mist,
Sparkling with cold brilliance
Where the winter sun has kissed.
The day now finally dawned,
My spirit wide awake,
I finish off my tea
Before one last look I take.
A smile rests on my lips
And I offer a prayer of thanks
As I step outside to stand barefoot
On the cold porch planks.
I stretch my arms skyward,
Giving in to one last yawn
And feel within the gentle peace
Of a winter's dawn.
